Verify the whole list before you zero-rate the invoice

If an intra-EU supply is zero-rated against a VAT number that was not valid at the time, the exemption can be refused and the VAT falls back on the supplier. This checks an entire list at once against the European Commission's official VIES service and returns a dated record for every number — validity, company name where the member state discloses it, and the official consultation number.

Checking is paused

The VIES terms of use restrict retransmission of VIES content, and this service retransmitted it — validity, company name and address were passed back through this site. Checking is suspended while that is reviewed, rather than continued while it is unresolved.

Numbers can be verified directly at the European Commission's own VIES service, which is the source this site used and is free to use. Nothing was stored here, so there is nothing to delete. Paused 2026-08-03.

Your own export, whatever columns it has. You get that exact file back — every column, every value, same row order — with status, company name, consultation number and timestamp appended. Part of the licence. Or paste a plain list below.

Country code included, e.g. HU10773381 or DE811907980. Spaces, dots and dashes are stripped for you.

Supply it and VIES issues an official consultation number for every check — the dated evidence that the verification happened. Included free.

Why the record matters

A verification is only worth what it can prove afterwards

  1. The zero rate rests on the customer's number.

An intra-EU supply is exempted on the basis that the customer is VAT-registered for cross-border trade. That status is a fact about a specific number at a specific moment, not a permanent property of a company.

  2. Numbers stop being valid without telling you.

Registrations are cancelled, businesses deregister, and a number that answered valid last quarter may not answer valid today. A list checked once is a list that has since aged.

  3. The consultation number is the part that survives an audit.

Supply your own VAT number and VIES issues a unique identifier for each check — the record that you verified the customer's status at a given moment, which is what good-faith verification is expected to look like. It is returned on every row and included free.

Every result comes from the European Commission's VIES service — the same system the tax authority uses. We add no judgement of our own.

Consultation numbers

Enter your own VAT number and VIES issues an official consultation number per check — the evidence of good-faith verification EU VAT rules expect. Included free.

Never guesses

VIES throttles requests and its member states go offline. Checks are paced and retried automatically, and a row that was not answered is reported as unresolved — never as valid or invalid.

Nothing is stored

Numbers pass through a proxy to reach VIES (browsers cannot call it directly) and are never written to disk, logged, or kept. See how that works.

Licence

One payment, no subscription

The free tool checks 25 numbers per run and exports a plain CSV. The lifetime licence adds the three things a real ledger run needs:

  • Your own file back. Drop the export from your accounting system and download that exact file returned — every column, every row in place — with status, company name, consultation number and timestamp appended.
  • Runs that finish. Up to 5,000 numbers, paced to the limits VIES enforces and retried automatically, with every unanswered row reported as unresolved rather than guessed.
  • The audit PDF. A timestamped record of the run, for filing alongside the invoices it supports.

$19one payment · all updates

Bought through Gumroad, which acts as merchant of record. A licence key activates the tool in this browser; paste it into the activation box that appears above once a run exceeds the free limit.

Not on sale. The licence is unavailable while checking is paused, and no payment can be taken.

Common questions

What people ask before trusting a result

Why can a VAT number be valid but show no company name?

Germany and Spain do not permit VIES to disclose trader name and address; other member states do. A missing name means "this member state does not publish it", never "this company does not exist". Results say so explicitly.

What is a consultation number and why does it matter?

When you supply your own VAT number, VIES returns a unique identifier for that specific check. It is the record that you verified a customer's status at a given moment — the basis for applying the zero rate on an intra-EU supply in good faith. Keep it with the invoice.

Why does my number come back invalid when I know the business exists?

Two frequent causes. First, formatting: spaces, dots and dashes are rejected — this tool strips them for you. Second, the business may be registered for domestic VAT but not for intra-EU trade, in which case VIES will not confirm it.

Why does it sometimes say a member state is unavailable?

VIES queries each national database live, and individual states go offline for maintenance. That is a temporary upstream condition, not an invalid number — results distinguish the two so you never record a false negative.

Is this an official EU service?

No. This is an independent tool that queries the official VIES service on your behalf and formats the results. The authoritative source is the European Commission.
